Earthquake story

An earthquake hit San Francisco Bay area on Monday morning. It struck at 8:12 a.m.

A building housing Mc Henrys Auto Supply at 2342 Plum St. collapsed.

"It killed two persons and injured six others," public information officer from the Hayward Fire Department Jennifer Vu said. "Names of the dead are pending," Vu said.

Residents across the street also felt the earthquake.

"I felt a rolling motion that was about 30 seconds," Hayward resident Mike Beamer said. "I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and cement flew through my kitchen window," Beamer said.

Hayward Firefighters used ropes to stabilize the auto supply shop.

"We has to use ropes," Firefighter Mark Robinson said. "We later conducted a search and detected a gas leak," Robinson said.

The earthquake was said to be really strong.

"I call this earthquake a "strong one"," Scientist from the U.S Geological Survey Penny Gertz said. "It occurred on the Hayward fault, which runs under the hills," Gertz said.

Twenty one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse.

"Workers from the police to the american red cross had come and some arriving four minutes after the quake," Vu said.

Some of the people were severely injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

"Three of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization and were taken to Hayward General Hospital," Vu said.

For know there has been no other injuries reported

"No other serious injuries have been reported in Hayward," Vu said

The quake has been felt farther Southern and Northern California.

"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz said.
